Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling?
Short answer
A refrigerator that runs but does not get cold usually has an airflow, defrost or cooling-system problem. Common causes include dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator or condenser fan, a defrost problem that has iced over the coils, or a failed start relay or compressor. Some causes are simple to rule out — temperature setting, blocked vents, door seals — but most need a technician to test the parts.
Common causes
Dirty condenser coils
The coils release heat from the refrigerator. When they are covered in dust and pet hair, the fridge cannot cool efficiently and may run constantly.
Evaporator fan not running
This fan pushes cold air from the freezer coils into the fresh-food section. If it stops, the freezer may still be cold while the fridge gets warm.
Defrost system failure
If the defrost heater, thermostat or control fails, frost builds up on the evaporator coils and blocks airflow. A thick layer of frost on the freezer back panel is a common sign.
Condenser fan failure
On many models a fan near the compressor cools the condenser. If it stops, the system overheats and cooling drops off.
Start relay or compressor problem
If you hear clicking but the compressor does not run, the start relay or the compressor itself may have failed.
Door seal or setting issues
A torn gasket, a door that does not close fully or a changed temperature setting can all reduce cooling.
What a technician checks
- Note the brand, model and whether the freezer is also warm
- Check fans, defrost components and the start relay with a meter
- Look for frost buildup on the evaporator coils
- Inspect condenser coils, door gaskets and airflow vents
Safety first
- Unplug the refrigerator before reaching behind it or removing panels.
- Keep perishable food at a safe temperature — move it to a cooler or another fridge if the inside is warming up.
When to call a technician
- The inside stays warm after checking the setting and the door seal
- The freezer is cold but the fridge section is warm
- You hear clicking but the compressor does not start
- You see heavy frost buildup on the freezer back wall
