What we do on a freezer repair call
Garage and patio freezers work harder here than almost anywhere else. Inland summer heat pushes an ambient-rated unit past its design range, and the first symptoms are a compressor that never cycles off and soft ice cream. We check the ambient rating, the coils and the seal before condemning the sealed system.
The usual repairs are defrost heaters and thermostats, evaporator and condenser fans, start relays, door gaskets and temperature controls. Frost buildup is generally a defrost or air-leak issue, not a sign the freezer is finished.

Common causes we find
Failed defrost heater or thermostat
Frost builds until it blocks airflow across the coil, and the freezer slowly loses its ability to hold temperature.
Bad start relay
A click every few minutes with no cooling. Common, affordable and usually a same-visit repair.
Dirty condenser coils or failed condenser fan
Especially common in garage installations. Heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor runs continuously and still loses ground.
Torn or hardened door gasket
Warm humid air leaks in, and the result looks exactly like a refrigeration failure — heavy frost plus constant running.
