Why Is My Dryer Not Heating?
Short answer
A dryer that tumbles but stays cold usually has a failed heating part or a safety device that has cut the heat. In electric dryers that is often the heating element, a thermal fuse or a thermostat. In gas dryers it is often the igniter, gas valve coils or a flame sensor. A clogged vent can also make a dryer overheat and trip those safety parts, so the vent should be checked along with the repair.
Common causes
Blown thermal fuse
A one-time safety fuse that cuts heat when the dryer gets too hot. If it has blown, something caused the overheating — often a restricted vent — and that cause needs to be found too, or the new fuse can fail again.
Failed heating element (electric dryers)
The element is a coil that heats the air. When it breaks, the drum still turns but the air stays cool.
Igniter or gas valve coil problem (gas dryers)
Gas dryers need the igniter to glow and the valve coils to open so the burner lights. When one of these fails, there is no flame and no heat.
Faulty thermostat or flame sensor
These parts tell the dryer when to heat and when to stop. If they fail, the dryer may never heat or may shut the heat off too early.
Power supply issue (electric dryers)
Electric dryers run their heat on a separate circuit leg. A tripped breaker or supply problem can leave the motor running with no heat.
Restricted vent
Lint buildup in the vent or a crushed hose traps heat, which can trip safety devices and make drying slow.
What a technician checks
- Confirm whether it is a gas or electric dryer and note the brand and model
- Test the thermal fuse, thermostats and heating element or igniter with a meter
- Check that the dryer is getting proper power or gas supply
- Inspect the vent path for lint buildup or crushing
Safety first
- Unplug the dryer before moving it or looking behind it.
- If you smell gas, do not operate the dryer or any switches — leave the area and contact your gas utility.
- Clean the lint screen every load; built-up lint is a fire risk.
When to call a technician
- The drum turns but clothes stay cold or damp
- The dryer heated briefly and then stopped
- You notice a burning smell or the outside of the dryer gets unusually hot
- It is a gas dryer — gas parts should be handled by a technician
