Washers & Dryers

Washer Not Draining or Not Spinning?

Short answer

Draining and spinning problems are often connected: many washers will not spin if water is not draining out. Common causes are a clogged drain pump or filter, a kinked drain hose, a failed drain pump, a faulty lid or door lock switch, or worn drive parts such as a belt, coupling or motor. An overloaded or unbalanced load can also stop the spin cycle.

Common causes

Clogged pump or filter

Socks, coins and lint can block the drain pump or its filter. Many front-load washers have an access filter near the bottom front.

Kinked or blocked drain hose

If the hose behind the washer is bent or clogged, water cannot leave the tub.

Failed drain pump

A pump that hums but does not move water, or makes no sound at all, may need replacement.

Lid or door lock switch

Washers will not spin unless the lid or door is detected as closed and locked. A failed switch stops the cycle.

Drive belt, coupling or motor

Worn or broken drive parts can leave the drum unable to spin even when water drains.

Unbalanced or oversized load

Bulky items like comforters can throw the load off balance, and many washers stop spinning to protect themselves.

What a technician checks

  • Note top-load or front-load, brand, model and any error code
  • Check the drain pump, filter and hose for blockages
  • Test the lid or door lock and the pump with a meter
  • Inspect the belt, coupling or motor where applicable

Safety first

  • Unplug the washer before opening any access panel.
  • Draining a full washer releases a lot of water — have towels and a shallow pan ready.

When to call a technician

  • Water stays in the drum after the cycle ends
  • The drum does not spin even with a small, balanced load
  • You hear humming, grinding or loud banging
  • An error code keeps coming back
