Dishwasher Not Draining or Not Cleaning?

Short answer

Draining and cleaning problems often share a cause. Standing water usually points to a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or air gap, a garbage disposal connection issue, or a failed drain pump. Dirty dishes after a cycle often come from a clogged filter or spray arms, low water fill, water that is not hot enough, or a failing wash pump.

Common causes

Clogged filter

Most dishwashers have a filter under the bottom rack. When it fills with food debris, water drains slowly and wash water gets recirculated dirty.

Blocked drain hose, air gap or disposal connection

A kinked hose, a clogged air gap on the sink, or a newly installed disposal with its knockout plug still in place can stop draining.

Failed drain pump

If the pump hums or stays silent and water remains, the pump may have failed or be jammed.

Clogged spray arms

Small holes in the spray arms can clog with debris or mineral buildup, leaving dishes dirty in certain spots.

Low water fill or inlet valve problem

If not enough water enters, the dishwasher cannot clean properly. A failing inlet valve is a common cause.

Water not hot enough or wash pump failing

Cool water or a weak wash pump reduces cleaning power.

What a technician checks

  • Note the brand, model and any error code
  • Inspect the filter, spray arms and drain path
  • Check the drain hose, air gap and disposal connection
  • Test the drain pump, wash pump and inlet valve

Safety first

  • Turn off power to the dishwasher before reaching into the sump area.
  • Watch for broken glass when cleaning the filter.

When to call a technician

  • Water is still standing after cleaning the filter
  • Dishes come out dirty or gritty after several cycles
  • The dishwasher hums but does not drain
  • You notice water on the floor near the dishwasher
